ANCINE Registration for Filming in Brazil

What is the ANCINE?
The ANCINE (Agência Nacional de Cinema) is the Brazilian film agency that regulates the economic and legal aspects of the Brazilian audiovisual industry.
Foreign production companies that intend to film a project in Brazil need to get a permit from the ANCINE before traveling to Brazil. The ANCINE registration/permit is also used to support as a prior authorization letter to help you obtain the business visa at the Brazilian embassy or consulate in your country, of course for those countries that do not have a business visa waiver agreement. Shoots handle by journalists are exempt from this requirement.
The Ancine also takes care of the registration and licensing of foreign works (films and commercials) to be exhibited in Brazilian territory.

Ancine Registration: How to Get It?
The Ancine registration must be completed by a local production company registered with Ancine. This means you’ll need to partner with a Brazilian production company to handle the registration process on your behalf. Once you’ve established this partnership the process can be initiated on the Ancine website. It is straightforward but requires specific documentation and information about your production. Typically, the following details will be needed:
-
A synopsis of the project (initial idea);
-
A basic shooting schedule, including planned filming dates;
-
Production agreement signed by you and the local productions company;
-
A foreign crew list, including names, roles, and passport identification pages.
Once all the required documents are submitted, the registration process usually takes 5 to 6 business days to complete.

Why is Ancine Registration Important?
Ancine registration is a mandatory procedure for all foreign productions filming in Brazil, with the exception as mentioned befor for journalistic works. Beyond ensuring compliance with local regulations, it provides an official letter that can be used as supporting documentation for processes such as the temporary importation of equipment through Brazilian Customs, particularly when crews decide to bring part of their equipment from abroad.
Additionally, by requiring a partnership with a local production company, the registration ensures that your production adheres to Brazilian labor, safety, and legal requirements. This partnership minimizes risks and helps avoid potential issues during filming, ensuring a smoother and more efficient production process.
